What is a Front-end Developer?
byAkbar RachmanFeb 193 min read

As Singapore hiring activity has been picking up since late 2021, tech talents are one of the many roles that have high demands in 2022. Due to the talent shortage, the salary offers will also be significantly high to attract job seekers; both from Singapore and outside talents. If you are a fresh-grad looking for a first job, or you are an experienced hire, planning to switch career, then tech jobs should be on one of your lists.

One of the roles are Web Developers; Front-end, Back-end, and Full-stack developer. So, what do they do exactly? This time, let’s discuss about Front-end Developer.

What is a Front-end Developer?

Front-end Developers are responsible of managing and assembling everything you can visibly see on a website. They are responsible to create a good user experience when people access & interact with the website; from fonts, colours, menus and dropdown menus, everything. Their main skills are a combination of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript programming languages.

They can also complement their skills by being fluent in frameworks like Bootstrap, Foundation, AngularJS, and ReactJS. With these tools, Front-end Developers will be able to bring wireframes from development to deliver, while also identifying specific issues in user experience and provide solutions.

A typical day in the life of a Front-end Developer includes activities like meeting with design teams, meeting with developer team, coding, researching techs to use on a work, debugging codes, and developing a designer’s mock-up idea into a functional code. Most Front-end Developers are working in a team; be it in a small start-up, in a well-established company, or even when they’re freelancing.

What is the Difference with Back-end Developer?

Like its name, Back-end Developers deal with the server and the database sides of a website. You access a website, typed in your credentials, logging in, and your profile show up with all its information? That’s the handiwork of a Back-end Developer.

Front-end Developers Demand in Singapore

Quite similar with what’s happening in the US and in India (worldwide probably), the web developers, especially Front-end Developers, are always in high demand. In the US, they even predicted that demand for this role will be increasing by 13% until 2028.

Even without looking at that data, the increased number of new tech start-ups in Singapore and Southeast Asia will be followed by the growing demand of their technical needs. We think it’s safe to say that there will be no shortage of demands for this role, at least for the next few years.

Average salary for Front-Developers in Singapore 2022

For the junior-level, the average monthly salary is SGD 5,000 – 5,500. The senior-level of this role, with 5 years minimum experience, can get up to around SGD 8,500 per month.
