Full-stack Developers: The Jack of All Trades
byAkbar RachmanFeb 223 min read

Full-stack itself refers to the entire depth of a computer system application, comprises of both front-end and back-end. That’s why a Full-stack Developer is sometimes called the master of programming languages, since he/she is capable of working & moving from one development environment to the next, seamlessly. But what do Full-stack Developers actually do, and what are the prospects of becoming one of them? Let’s take a look.

What is a Full-stack Developer?

Full-stack Developers are a full package. If Front-end Developers are working for the client-side and within the limit of anything user can visibly see on a website, and Back-end Developers are handling the server-application-database side and all internal architecture of a system application, then Full-stack Developers are working cross-functionally on both realms. They are well versed in both front-end and back-end.

Modern Full-stack Developers are mostly experienced developers that can build a viable product or application on their own. They can also identify errors in between front-end & back-end, and create effective solutions for both parts.

In all, Full-stack Developers must be capable in creating websites with solid internal architecture and providing good interface experience to users. They are a knowledge tank, and any web developers should have at least one Full-stack Developer in their team.

A typical day in the life of a Full-stack Developer involves working with design teams to create interactive & intuitive display of a website, managing databases & servers, keeping up with the tech updates that may suitable and relevant for the project & the business, and perhaps prototyping products & communicate those ideas to stakeholders.

What is the Difference with Front-end and Back-end Developers?

In a word, Front-end covers that front-half of the website and Back-end covers the back-half; Full-stack Developers are capable to build, run, & manage both sides.
