byAkbar RachmanFeb 213 min read

As Singapore hiring activity has been increasing since late last year, tech talents are one of the many roles that are in high demand. Due to the talent shortage, the salary offers will also be significantly high to attract job seekers; both from Singapore and other Southeast Asia countries. If you are a fresh-grad looking for a first job, or you are an experienced hire, planning to switch career, then tech jobs should be on one of your lists.

One of the roles are Web Developers; Front-end, Back-end, and Full-stack developer. So, what do they do exactly? This time, let’s discuss about Back-end Developer.

What is a Back-end Developer?

While Front-end Developers are responsible of managing and assembling everything you can visibly see on a website, Back-end Developers handle everything behind it.

They are dealing with the server and database sides of a website. You access a website, typed in your credentials, logging in, and your profile show up with all its information? That’s the handiwork of Back-end Developers. Their codes add utility, to everything Front-end Developers create.

Back-end Developers need to make sure that the server, application, and database of a website are communicating well between each other; by utilizing programming languages & tools like PHP, Ruby, Python, Java, .NET, SQL, Oracle, and many more. In short, a good Back-end Developer would have a proper knowledge & experience of back-end programming languages, databases, server, and APIs.

Just like Front-end Developers, Back-end Developers also need to collaborate with other developers & teams on daily basis, especially with business stakeholders to understand what they want and what they need. They are expected to identify the technical requirements and come up with the most suitable technical solutions.

Some of their responsibilities include;

  • Build a scalable and a stable system’s architecture to support the web applications
  • Develop and maintain efficient data transfer between server-side algorithms and client-side applications
  • Ensure that web application is fast and performs well despite traffic changes

What is the Difference with Front-end Developer?

Front-end Developers manage and assemble everything you see on a website. Back-end Developer working in the behind, developing & maintaining the system, so that all activities and integration with servers & databases are running smoothly.
